Filtration efficacy of the Lekko anti-pollution scarf

According to a study by the World Health Organization, 6.5 million deaths were associated with exposure to polluted air in 2012. The most dangerous particles of dust are the PM2,5 and PM10. In long-term they cause shorter life expectancy and exposure to high dust concentrations causes respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, increases the risk of urgent hospitalization (asthma severity, acute respiratory response, decreased lung function, etc.).

The average life expectancy of an EU citizen is therefore shorter by approx. 8 months. The situation in Poland is even worse - atmospheric pollution shortens life by 10-12 months.

Year by year the problem becomes more serious and has a real impact on the well-being and health of urban residents exposed to high concentrations of suspended particulates. The European Union has set the permissible level for PM10 - 50 μg / m3 (daily) and 40 μg / m3 (medium-yearly), and for PM2,5 - 25 μg / m3 (medium-yearly). Unfortunately, the average annual dust concentration in Poland exceeds the norm, in some cities almost twice, and the number of days during which the admissible level is exceeded ranges from 120 to 150 days.

One of the ways to limit the impact of dust on our health is the use of anti-pollution scarfs, which have special filters that limit the inhaled impurities. In the article below, we will present the effectiveness of our products based on specific standards.

Filtration efficacy of the Lekko anti-pollution scarf

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has defined filter ratings used in masks for protection against contaminated air, for whatever reason:

The first part of the filter classification uses the letters N, R or P to indicate the filter's ability to function after exposure to oils:

"N" = not resistant to oils,

"R" = to some extent resistant to oils,

"P" = very resistant to oils.

The second part contains the percentage of particles that the mask has to block before entering the respiratory system.

Example: N95 - these filters are designed to seal tightly around the mouth and nose and are made of a material certified to block 95% of particles with a diameter of 3 μm or greater, about the size of a single virus. This includes also PM2,5.

In Lekko we use a filter with the N99 designation. This means that more than 99% of harmful dust with a diameter of 0.1 μm or more are being blocked. This guarantees safety against almost all particles dangerous for our health.

Some manufacturers use HEPA filters, that in fact do not differ much from N99. This is a small difference but highly significant to our health. HEPA filters used in anti-pollution masks protect against particles of at least 3 μm. This means that the use of this type of filtration does not protect us against the most dangerous PM2,5 particles.

Lekko scarf design

Our scarfs consists of four layers:

The outer layer is the highest quality cotton with a weave created from scratch to protect against bad weather and cold. It not only ensures heat retention, but also thanks to the micro-pore system allows for free air exchange during breathing.

Inside of Lekko scarf you'll find a filtering system consisting of two layers: activated carbon and a special nano-fibre fabric able to filter particles as small as 0.1 micron. This level of filtration will also protect you against pollen, pesticides, viruses, bacteria, chemical contaminants, combustion particles from engines, cigarette smoke).

The last fourth layer is the internal lining which makes wearing it everyday a comfortable and pleasant experience. It consists of cotton padding material (lower part) and a skin-friendly micro-mesh separating the face from the filter surface and ensuring free air flow.

In the filtering system, we used two large exhaust valves (internal diameter 28 mm) enabling quick release of exhaled carbon dioxide and moisture.
